ThinkPad T480s — Business Portable

The Lenovo ThinkPad T480s is a 14.0-inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i5-8250U processor with 8 GB of DDR4 memory and a 180 GB solid-state drive. It ships with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and includes integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics, a matte 1920 x 1080 IPS display, fingerprint reader, 4G LTE WWAN, and Bluetooth 4.1. Weighing between 2 and 2.9 lbs, it targets mobile professionals who need a durable, security-focused machine for daily productivity on the move.

Upgrade From Older Ultraportable

This model replaces ageing ultraportables that lack Thunderbolt connectivity, modern biometric login, or integrated 4G LTE. The jump is worth it when you need up to 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth for docks or external GPUs, hardware match-on-chip fingerprint authentication, and a MIL-SPEC tested chassis rated for 21 environmental tests. Buyers who want more storage than 180 GB or a newer operating system than Windows 7 Pro should consider other configurations.

Straightforward Deployment

The T480s arrives ready to use with no assembly required — just power on and complete the Windows 7 Pro setup. Driver installation is standard for ThinkPad hardware, and the UltraNav touchpad works immediately alongside the TrackPoint. Common friction points include the end-of-life Windows 7 Pro OS requiring an upgrade path for security updates, the soldered memory preventing RAM expansion beyond 8 GB, and the 180 GB SSD filling quickly with large local files.

Questions about this item

What physical space does the 14.0" IPS FHD display and 2.9 lbs weight require in a bag or sleeve?

The 14.0" screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a weight up to 2.9 lbs fits standard 14-inch laptop sleeves and briefcase compartments.

How is the DDR4 memory installed, and what step is often missed?

The 8GB DDR4 is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded; the step often missed is verifying the 8GB capacity meets needs before purchase.

What maintenance will the 180GB SSD and Windows 7 Pro need later?

The 180GB SSD has no moving parts but Windows 7 Pro reached end of support, so plan an OS upgrade to maintain security patches.
