Business-ready 14-inch notebook

The ThinkPad T490 is a 14-inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i5-8265U quad-core processor that reaches 3.9 GHz on turbo. It ships with 8 GB of DDR4 memory soldered to the board and a 256 GB NVMe drive. The IPS panel delivers 1920 x 1080 resolution with a 250 cd/m2 brightness rating and 170° viewing angles. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed.

Step up from 7th-gen dual-core or HDD-only machines

Moving from a 7th-generation dual-core system or a spinning-drive configuration gives a noticeable lift in multi-thread responsiveness and boot speed. The four cores and NVMe storage cut compile times and large-file opens. If your current device already runs a quad-core 8th-gen chip with solid-state storage, the daily difference will be modest.

Sustained office workloads stay stable

Under continuous load such as video calls, spreadsheet recalculations and background sync, the U-series chip holds clocks without aggressive throttling. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles external displays over HDMI or Thunderbolt without frame drops. Thermals remain controlled during typical business sessions, though extended rendering tasks will push the fan curve higher.

Questions about this item

What size M.2 NVMe SSD does the T490 accept for storage upgrades?

The laptop uses a 256 GB NVMe drive; the slot accepts standard 2280 M.2 NVMe SSDs for replacement or additional capacity.

How is the RAM configured and can I add a SO-DIMM module?

8 GB of DDR4-2400 memory is soldered to the board and there is no free SO-DIMM slot, so total memory cannot be increased.

When should I replace the 720p webcam privacy cover if the hinge feels loose?

The integrated 720p camera has a built-in sliding shutter; replace the cover assembly only if the slider no longer stays open or closed.
