14" WQHD ThinkPad for mobile professionals

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5 is a 14-inch ultralight laptop built on a carbon-fibre reinforced chassis tested against 12 military-grade requirements and more than 200 durability checks. It weighs 2.49 lbs and ships new with Windows 7 Professional, an Intel Core i7-7500U processor reaching 3.5 GHz, 8 GB of memory and a 512 GB NVMe PCIe SSD. The 2560 x 1440 IPS display is non-touch.

Who this suits and who it does not

This unit fits buyers who need integrated 4G LTE WWAN broadband, Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C for 40 Gbps data and charging, and a fingerprint reader on a lightweight frame. It is not for users who require a touchscreen, a newer Windows release, more than 8 GB of RAM, or a larger display than 14 inches.

Deciding specification: 4G LTE WWAN

The factory-installed 4G LTE WWAN card provides mobile broadband connectivity without a separate dongle, a feature absent on many ultraportables. If your workflow depends on always-on cellular data, this laptop meets that need; if you rely solely on Wi-Fi, the same money may buy a newer platform elsewhere.

Questions about this item

What does the 3.5 GHz turbo speed of the i7-7500U deliver in daily work?

The dual-core processor reaches 3.5 GHz on short bursts, keeping office apps, web browsing and video playback responsive while the 8 GB memory handles multitasking.

What does the Thunderbolt 3 port’s 40 Gbps limit mean for docks and displays?

A single USB-C cable can carry data, power and two 4K video streams simultaneously, so one dock replaces multiple adapters.

Will the 14.0 inch chassis fit a standard 14 inch laptop sleeve?

Yes, the carbon-fibre frame measures 14 inches diagonally and weighs 2.49 lbs, matching typical 14 inch sleeve dimensions.
