Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5 is a 14-inch laptop built for professionals who need a durable, lightweight machine with integrated mobile broadband. It ships new with Windows 7 Professional, an Intel Core i7-7600U processor, 8 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD. The carbon-fiber chassis meets 12 military-grade requirements and passes more than 200 durability tests.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This laptop suits mobile workers who value a rugged, sub-3-pound design, a fingerprint reader and 4G LTE WWAN connectivity for working away from Wi-Fi. It does not suit buyers who need a touchscreen, a newer operating system than Windows 7 Pro or more than 8 GB of memory because the configuration is fixed.

Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C

The single specification that decides fit is the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port delivering up to 40 Gbps of data and video bandwidth. It enables single-cable docking, external GPU enclosures and fast storage that older USB-C ports cannot support.

Questions about this item

Does the 4G LTE WWAN card need an active SIM card from a mobile carrier to connect?

Yes, the built-in 4G LTE WWAN module requires a carrier-provided nano-SIM and an active data plan before it can establish a mobile broadband connection.

Will the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port work with my older USB 3.0 Type-A peripherals?

The Thunderbolt 3 port uses a USB-C connector, so legacy USB 3.0 Type-A devices require a compatible adapter or cable to connect.

How can I confirm the Intel Core i7-7600U is reaching its 3.9 GHz turbo frequency under load?

Open Task Manager’s Performance tab or a monitoring utility and watch the CPU clock speed while running a demanding single-thread task.
