Compact business laptop

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is a 12.5-inch touchscreen laptop built for mobile professionals who need a durable, keyboard-focused machine. It runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on an Intel Core i7-2640M processor with 16GB of DDR3 memory and a 320GB hard drive. The HD display resolves at 1366x768 and supports pen input for precise annotation. This configuration suits users who value legacy OS compatibility and robust construction in a small footprint.

Build integration

The system includes three USB ports, a VGA output, a DisplayPort connection and a dedicated docking connector compatible with other ThinkPad series docks. Gigabit LAN and 802.11b/g/n wireless provide wired and wireless networking without extra adapters. Shared system memory handles graphics, freeing expansion slots for other uses. The chassis omits an SSD, so the 320GB hard drive remains the sole internal storage device unless the drive bay is repurposed.

Bundled experience

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit delivers a familiar desktop environment with support for the full 16GB memory capacity. The touchscreen and included pen enable direct screen interaction for note-taking or presentations. Dual-array microphones with Private Chat and Conference Call modes adjust pickup patterns for different meeting sizes, while keyboard-noise suppression and mute LEDs keep audio clean during calls. The Active Protection System helps safeguard the hard drive against shocks during transport.

Questions about this item

How does the Intel Core i7-2640M behave when it runs at its 3.5 GHz turbo frequency for long periods?

The processor can reach 3.5 GHz in short bursts, but sustained loads will drop clocks to stay within its thermal envelope, so expect lower steady-state speeds during all-day tasks.

What are the typical fan noise and surface temperatures when the X220 runs a full-day workload?

Under continuous load the dual-fan cooling spins up audibly and the keyboard deck grows warm, especially near the rear vents, though it remains usable on a desk without a pad.

Which peripherals must I already own to use the VGA, DisplayPort and docking connector on this unit?

You need a VGA or DisplayPort cable for an external monitor and a compatible ThinkPad Series 3 dock if you want one-cable desk connectivity with the rectangular docking port.
