Diamond Pattern External Drive

The LUOM Diamond Pattern External CD DVD Drive is a USB 3.0 portable combo drive for notebooks, laptops, MacBooks and desktop PCs. It reads and writes CD and DVD media including dual-layer and DVD-RAM formats. The drive draws power directly from the USB port and requires no external adapter or driver installation. It suits users who need optical media access on devices lacking an internal bay.

USB 3.0 Interface

The drive connects via a USB 3.0 interface compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.0 ports. The specification lists a data transfer rate of 300MB/s and a 2MB cache buffer. Maximum read speeds reach 24x for CD media and 8x for DVD media. Write speeds peak at 8x for DVD+R and DVD-R and 8x for CD-R and CD-RW. Access times are 100ms for CD-ROM and 95ms for DVD-ROM.

Disc Capacity and Limits

The burner handles single-layer DVD+/-R at 8x and dual-layer DVD+/-R DL at 6x. It writes DVD-RAM at 5x and rewritable DVD+/-RW at 4x. CD-R and CD-RW recording reaches 8x. Supported formats include DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, CD-EXTRA and CD-TEXT with LabelFlash labelling. The drive does not read or write Blu-ray media. Buyers needing Blu-ray support or internal SATA installation should choose a different product.

Questions about this item

What does the 300 MB/s data transfer rate mean when the drive is connected?

The 300 MB/s figure reflects the SATA link speed inside the enclosure; real-world throughput is limited by the USB 3.0 interface and the disc media speed.

How does the USB 3.0 interface affect performance compared to the drive's internal SATA connection?

USB 3.0 caps at 5 Gbps, so sustained reads and writes will not exceed that ceiling even though the internal SATA link runs at 300 MB/s.

What physical connections are required to use the drive?

The drive draws power and data from a single USB 3.0 port; no external power adapter or separate SATA cable is needed for operation.
