What this converter does

The Mediasonic YE-006A extracts audio from a TV’s ARC or eARC HDMI port and outputs it through a 6 foot optical cable. It is intended for owners of soundbars, amplifiers or active speakers that lack an HDMI input but accept a digital optical connection. The box draws power from a TV USB port or a separate adapter and requires no driver installation.

Sustained-load behaviour

The converter handles continuous 24-bit 192 kHz PCM 2.0 streams as well as Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1 bitstreams without drop-outs during long viewing sessions. It does not pass CEC volume commands through the optical link, so the TV remote cannot control the external amplifier’s level. A stable USB power source is required for uninterrupted operation.

When the upgrade makes sense

This adapter replaces a missing optical output on modern televisions, letting an existing sound system stay in service after a TV upgrade. It is not for setups that already have a working HDMI ARC connection between TV and audio gear, nor for installations that need multi-channel formats beyond 5.1 or CEC-based volume control.
