Translate the signal or just reshape the plug?

A passive adapter only rewires pins, and it works when both ends already speak the same signal. DisplayPort to HDMI or DVI is the usual case, provided the source supports dual-mode output. A converter contains a chip that translates one signal into another, such as HDMI to VGA or SDI to HDMI, and some models need extra power from USB or a wall adapter. Direction is fixed: an HDMI to VGA converter will not work backwards, and VGA to HDMI is a different product. VGA carries no sound, so converters to VGA often add a separate audio output.

Picture limits, and broadcast formats that do not mix

Check the listed resolution and refresh rate against your display. A converter that handles 1080p suits most monitors, but 4K at 60 Hz needs a newer standard and usually an active chip, and many units stop at 4K 30 Hz. Broadcast and security formats are their own world: SDI travels on BNC connectors, and TVI, CVI and AHD camera signals each need a converter that names the format, because they are not interchangeable. Very long cables also weaken a passive adapter's signal, so keep runs short.

Questions about Video Converters for HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA and SDI

Can I convert VGA to HDMI with a simple cable?
No. VGA is analog and HDMI is digital, so a converter with a chip is needed to digitize the picture, plus a separate audio input if you want sound. Make sure the converter is built for VGA in and HDMI out, not the other way around.
Why does my DisplayPort to HDMI adapter show no picture?
Direction, power and source support are the usual causes. Use an adapter made for DisplayPort in and HDMI out, check that a passive adapter's source supports dual-mode output, and connect any USB power lead the adapter requires.
What is SDI and do I need an SDI converter?
SDI is a professional video interface carried on BNC cable, used in broadcast and production gear. If a camera or switcher outputs SDI and your monitor takes HDMI, you need an SDI-to-HDMI converter that supports the camera's resolution and frame rate.
