Active fiber cable delivers 100 Gb/s Ethernet over 5 metres with QSFP28 connectors
The Mellanox active fiber cable delivers up to 100 Gb/s over a five-metre LSZH run. It uses QSFP28 connectors compliant with SFF-8665 and draws 2.2 W per end with retiming enabled. A single 3.3 V supply powers the integrated optics. The link targets data-centre Ethernet fabrics that need reach beyond passive copper.
When passive direct-attach cables hit their length or loss budget, this AOC extends the connection without adding transceivers. The jump is worth it when rack spacing exceeds the reach of DAC assemblies or when cable bulk must be reduced in dense patches. It is not for deployments that require longer than five metres or multi-mode fibre patching.
Programmable Tx equalisation and Rx pre-emphasis keep the bit-error rate low across temperature drift. Selectable retiming absorbs jitter that accumulates over the full link budget. Power draw stays at the typical 2.2 W per end, so thermal load is predictable in fully populated cages.
Measured against everything we stock in Ethernet & LAN Cables, at today’s prices. Recalculated every night.

The active optical cable is 5 metres long with LSZH jacket and QSFP28 ends; allow slack for the minimum bend radius so the 5 m run fits cleanly in standard 1U cable managers.
Each end uses an SFF-8665 compliant QSFP28 port running from a single 3.3 V supply; insert the modules until the latch clicks to engage the retiming circuitry.
The typical 2.2 W dissipation per end assumes retiming is active; if the link is reconfigured to non-retimed mode or the switch firmware changes power policies, verify the thermal budget again.
