Matching Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A or Cat8 to your link

Categories differ in bandwidth and in the speed they hold over distance. Cat5e handles gigabit to 100 m. Cat6 does the same and reaches 10 Gbit/s over short runs of about 55 m, while Cat6A holds 10 Gbit/s for the full 100 m. Cat8 is built for 25 and 40 Gbit/s between switches and servers over runs up to about 30 m. For a home router, console or PC on a gigabit or 2.5 Gbit/s link, Cat5e or Cat6 is plenty. The slowest port in the chain sets the speed.

Shielding, conductor size and cable shape

UTP cables are unshielded and fine in most homes. Foil or braid shielding, written as FTP, STP or S/FTP, helps near power cabling or heavy equipment, and Cat8 cables are shielded by design. Conductor size shows as AWG: 24 AWG is standard, while thin 28 or 30 AWG flat cables slide under doors and carpets but run hotter and lose more on PoE devices, so keep those short. Molded boots protect the clip, but a bulky one may block neighboring ports on a dense switch.

Questions about Ethernet and LAN Network Cables

Does Cat8 make online gaming faster?
No. Game latency depends on your connection and router, not the cable category. Cat6 or even Cat5e already carries a gigabit link, and Cat8 only helps with 25 or 40 Gbit/s links between servers and switches.
Can I mix Cat5e and Cat6 cables on one network?
Yes. They use the same RJ45 plugs and wiring, and the connection runs at the speed the weakest part supports, whether that is a cable, a wall socket or a port.
Does the cable length affect speed?
Within the 100 m Ethernet limit, no. A full run can be up to 100 m including the patch cords. Beyond that, errors rise and the link may drop to a slower speed or fail.
