Surface Laptop 3 15 Touch 8GB 128GB SSD

This 15 inch touchscreen laptop runs Windows 10 Home with an AMD Ryzen 5 3580U processor, 8GB of memory and a 128GB solid state drive. The IPS display offers a 2496 by 1664 resolution and supports touch input. It connects via 802.11ac wireless LAN and ships in a Platinum silver finish. Buyers who need more storage or discrete graphics should look elsewhere.

Sustained load behaviour integrated graphics

The integrated graphics share system memory and are suited to everyday productivity, web browsing and media playback. Under continuous heavy workloads the quad core processor manages thermal output within the thin chassis without a discrete cooling solution. Performance scales with the 16GB maximum memory limit when both slots are populated. Extended gaming or render sessions will throttle quickly.

Installation and common issues

Memory is soldered and not user replaceable, so the 8GB configuration is fixed for the life of the device. The 128GB SSD can be swapped by a qualified technician but requires disassembly of the aluminium body. Driver updates are delivered through Windows Update and keep the Ryzen platform stable. Opening the case voids the manufacturer seal.

Questions about this item

How much power does the AMD Ryzen 5 3580U draw during all-day workloads?

The AMD Ryzen 5 3580U is a 15-watt class mobile processor designed for thin-and-light laptops, so sustained workloads stay within a low thermal envelope that the fanless or single-fan chassis can manage without loud spin-up.

Does the Surface Laptop 3 15" need any proprietary dock or adapter to charge or connect external displays?

It charges through the proprietary Surface Connect port and includes one USB-C 3.1 port that supports video output, so you can use a standard USB-C hub or monitor cable without a Microsoft-branded dock.

Will my older USB-A flash drives and HDMI monitor plug straight into this 15-inch model?

The laptop has only one USB-C and one USB-A port plus Surface Connect; HDMI requires a USB-C adapter or hub, while USB-A drives work directly on the single Type-A socket.
