Compact half-rack shelf for small devices

The Middle Atlantic MS-5.5 is a 1/2 RU steel shelf that mounts in the front or rear of a standard rack. It provides a stable platform for modems, switches or other shallow hardware. Black powder-coat finish matches typical cabinet aesthetics.

Fixed 5.5 inch depth limits equipment size

The shelf extends only 5.5 inches from the rack rails, so it suits low-profile gear but cannot hold deeper appliances. Mounting requires 10-32 or 5mm rack screws threaded into the rackrail; no other fastening method is supported. Cable-tie slots run along the surface for basic wire management.

Replaces ad-hoc brackets or full-depth trays

Installers who previously used makeshift brackets or wasted a full 1U tray gain a dedicated half-height position. The jump is worthwhile when rack space is tight and the device fits within the shallow depth. Heavier or deeper units still need a larger shelf.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 5.5" depth shelf or a deeper option for my small devices?

The 5.5" depth is designed for compact items and fits standard racks; select it when your equipment depth matches this dimension.

What does the 1/2 RU height mean once the shelf is installed in my rack?

It occupies half a rack unit, leaving the adjacent half unit free for another component or cable routing.

How do the 10-32 and 5mm rack screw requirements affect mounting in my rack?

The shelf must be secured with standard 10-32 or 5mm screws into threaded rack rails for a stable installation.
