Converts a USB port to an RS-232 DB9 serial link for industrial gear, networking kit and legacy peripherals using an FTDI FT232RL chipset
This adapter uses an FTDI FT232RL chip to give a modern USB-A port a male DB9 RS-232 interface. It targets technicians and integrators who must talk to routers, CNC controllers, barcode scanners, label printers or older industrial equipment that still speaks 9-pin serial.
The FT232RL processor maintains reliable signalling across the full 16.9 in cable length without the drop-outs common in cheaper bridge chips. Active lines are RXD, TXD and GND; the remaining pins follow the standard 9-wire pinout so hardware flow control works where the attached device expects it.
The connector is male DB9, so the mate on your equipment must be female — check the port before ordering. Windows 11 through 7, Mac OS 8 or later and Linux 2.4.0 and later are supported, but the driver must be downloaded from the official FTDI or Cisco site before first use.

The adapter uses an FT232RL chip and draws power from the USB port; its small 0.07 lb form factor produces minimal heat during all-day operation.
Yes, the cable has a USB-A male plug on one end and a DB9 male connector on the other, so the host needs USB-A and the serial device needs a DB9 female port.
The cable provides a full 9-wire RS-232 pinout (DCD, RXD, TXD, DTR, GND, DSR, RTS, CTS, RI) and supports Windows, Mac OS 8+ and Linux 2.4.0+, matching legacy DB9 gear.
