Portable SSD with Active Cooling

The Orico R40 Silverstone is a 1TB external solid-state drive that uses a USB-C interface and includes a built-in cooling fan plus an aluminium alloy shell. It is aimed at users who move large media files between desktops, laptops, phones, consoles or routers and need sustained throughput without thermal throttling. The drive ships with a dual-headed cable for USB-C and USB-A hosts.

Suited for sustained high-speed workflows

Creators and power users who regularly transfer multi-gigabyte projects will benefit from the active cooling that keeps performance stable during long writes. Buyers who only move occasional documents or small backups will not see the advantage of the fan-equipped design over simpler fanless drives. The single 1TB capacity also limits appeal for anyone needing more storage in one enclosure.

40Gbps interface enables up to 3700MB/s

The decisive specification is the 40Gbps USB-C connection that allows sequential reads and writes up to 3700MB/s when the host port supports that bandwidth. A 30% analog cache helps maintain burst speeds, while UASP protocol support reduces overhead. If the host port is slower, the drive will operate at the host's maximum rate.

Questions about this item

What real-world throughput does the 40 Gbps USB-C interface cap at with this drive?

The drive reaches up to 3700 MB/s read and write over the 40 Gbps USB-C link.

What physical space and mounting does the aluminium alloy enclosure with built-in fan require?

The sports-car styled alloy shell integrates the fan and ducts, so it only needs a free USB-C port and desk space for the drive itself.

How is the drive set up, and which step do users often miss?

Connect the supplied two-in-one USB-C to USB-A/C cable, then ensure the host port supports the 40 Gbps standard to unlock the 3700 MB/s speed.
