Compact firewall appliance

The Partaker R9 is a 19-inch 1U rackmount network appliance built around an Intel Core i5-3470 processor on a B75 chipset. It ships with 4GB of DDR3 memory and a 32GB mSATA SSD, plus six Intel Gigabit LAN ports for multi-WAN or segmented LAN deployments. The unit includes VGA, two USB ports, a console interface and a single LAN bypass set for failover scenarios.

Gigabit throughput ceiling

Each of the six RJ-45 ports is driven by Intel 82574L, 82583V or I211 controllers and negotiates at 10/100/1000 Mbps. The supplier states that LAN-to-WAN forwarding throughput reaches 1000 Mbps, so aggregate traffic above that rate will hit the port-speed limit. The 150W internal power supply operates on 100-240V AC at 50/60 Hz.

Pre-deployment checks

Verify that your rack or wall-mount space accommodates the 430 x 270 x 50 mm chassis and 6.5 kg weight. Confirm the intended firewall distribution — pfSense, OPNsense, Untangle or another FreeBSD- or Linux-based image — boots on the i5-3470 with AES-NI support. Plan memory expansion up to 32GB using two SODIMM DDR3 modules at 1333 or 1600 MT/s, and decide whether a 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drive will occupy the secondary storage bay.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 4 GB RAM and 32 GB SSD configuration or look for a larger memory and storage option?

The unit ships with 4 GB DDR3 RAM and a 32 GB mSATA SSD; the board accepts two SO-DIMM slots up to 32 GB total and also provides a 2.5 or 3.5 inch drive bay for additional storage.

What does the 1000 Mbps throughput figure mean when the appliance is running a full firewall ruleset?

The 1000 Mbps rating reflects Layer-3 forwarding across a single Gigabit NIC from LAN to WAN; actual throughput will vary with rule complexity, VPN encryption and concurrent sessions.

Are the six LAN ports true Gigabit Ethernet and what controller chips do they use?

All six RJ-45 ports are 10/100/1000 Mbps and are driven by Intel 82574L, 82583V or I211 controllers.
