Role and fit

The PIODATA DVR-S21DBK is a half-height 5.25" internal optical drive that writes and reads CD and DVD media. It suits anyone adding legacy disc support to a desktop PC, a duplicator tower or a home-theatre PC where a tray-load mechanism is preferred.

Capacity and headroom

Maximum write speeds reach 24X for DVD±R, 8X for DVD±R DL, 8X for DVD+RW and 6X for DVD-RW, while CD-R hits 48X and CD-RW 32X. Read speeds top out at 16X for DVD-ROM and 48X for CD-ROM. A 512 KB cache smooths sustained transfers, though the drive cannot handle Blu-ray or M-DISC media.

Build integration

The unit connects via a standard SATA data and power interface and mounts in any 5.25" bay with a black bezel and tray-load action. No extra drivers are required on modern operating systems, and the bare-drive package leaves cable selection and mounting screws to the builder.

Questions about this item

Will this SATA DVD burner work in a system that still uses an older SATA controller?

Yes, the drive uses a standard SATA interface and will function with any SATA controller that supports optical drives.

How can I verify the drive is performing at its rated speeds after installation?

Check the burning software or device manager for the active write speeds; the drive supports up to 24X DVD±R, 8X DVD±R DL, 48X CD-R and 32X CD-RW.

Does the box include mounting screws or a SATA cable, or do I need to buy them separately?

The package contains the bare 5.25" black tray drive only; mounting screws and SATA data and power cables are not included.
