GL-A1300 portable VPN router

The GL-A1300 Slate Plus is a dual-band AC wireless router built around an IPQ4018 CPU running at 717MHz. It delivers 400Mbps on 2.4GHz and 867Mbps on 5GHz, with OpenVPN and WireGuard pre-installed for up to 28Mbps and 170Mbps VPN throughput respectively. OpenWrt 21.02 provides full programmability and package installation. The unit measures 118 x 84 x 33mm and weighs 429g, supplied with a US power adapter and Ethernet cable.

Travellers needing secure public Wi-Fi

This router suits anyone who regularly connects laptops or phones to hotel, café or airport hotspots and wants encrypted tunnels without configuring each device. The USB port adds SAMBA and WebDav network storage when a drive is attached. Buyers who require higher VPN throughput, multi-gigabit WAN or rack-mountable hardware should look at other product categories.

170Mbps WireGuard ceiling

The single specification that decides fit is the maximum WireGuard speed of 170Mbps. If your internet connection and VPN provider regularly exceed that rate, the CPU will become the bottleneck. For typical travel connections well below this figure, the GL-A1300 handles encryption comfortably.
