RCA PST148 Bidirectional Coaxial Optical Converter 192kHz 24bit audio adapter

What it is and who it serves

The RCA PST148 is a bidirectional digital audio converter that translates signals between coaxial SPDIF and optical Toslink formats. It supports LPCM 2.0, DTS and Dolby AC3 up to 24-bit 192 kHz sampling rates. A selector switch chooses the input direction, and a 2-metre optical cable ships in the box. The unit is aimed at home-theatre owners who need to connect legacy gear with mismatched digital ports.

How it fits a system

The converter sits between a source such as a Blu-ray player, console or satellite receiver and a soundbar, amplifier or UHD TV. It accepts either coaxial or optical input and outputs both simultaneously, so one source can feed two zones. Optical fibre runs up to 30 metres with less than 0.2 dB per metre loss; coaxial runs up to 10 metres. Power comes from the included USB cable, so no separate mains adapter is required.

What it replaces and when to upgrade

This adapter replaces a simple passive gender changer or a single-direction optical-to-coaxial dongle that cannot handle multichannel formats. The jump is worth it when you must pass 5.1-channel DTS or Dolby AC3 bidirectionally and need the 192 kHz headroom for high-resolution stereo streams. It does not support DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD, so buyers who want lossless high-bitrate formats will need a different solution.
