Count the bands on the plug

Count the insulating bands on a plug. One band marks a mono TS plug, two bands a stereo TRS plug, and three bands a TRRS plug that adds a microphone or control line, as on phone headsets. Mixing them has side effects: a TRRS headset in a TRS-only socket may play sound but lose the microphone. Size is the second check. A 3.5 mm plug is common on laptops and phones, 6.35 mm (quarter inch) on studio headphones and instruments, and 2.5 mm on some older handsets. A size adapter keeps the same wiring.

Direction matters for RCA, XLR and USB-C adapters

RCA plugs carry one channel each, usually white or black for left and red for right, so a 3.5 mm to dual RCA cable splits one stereo output into two jacks. A female-to-female RCA coupler only joins two cables end to end. XLR is a balanced professional connector, and a simple plug adapter does not turn an unbalanced source into a balanced one. USB-C to 3.5 mm adapters come in two kinds: some contain a small converter chip and work on most devices, while others pass analog audio only and need a phone that outputs it.

Questions about Audio Jack and RCA Adapters

Can I connect headphones to RCA outputs?
You can with a 3.5 mm to RCA cable, but RCA outputs are line-level signals meant for an amplifier, not headphones. Volume is often low and sometimes fixed. A headphone output, or a small headphone amplifier, gives better results.
Why does my USB-C audio adapter not work on my phone?
Some adapters are passive and pass analog audio only, which many phones do not output on the USB-C port. Others contain a converter chip and work with a wider range of devices. Check the listing for a converter chip and your device's support for audio over USB-C.
Can a Y-splitter combine two audio sources into one input?
Not safely. A passive Y cable splits one output to two inputs, but joining two outputs into one input can distort the sound or stress the sources. To blend two sources you need a small mixer or a switcher.
