Ricoh fi-8040 Compact Desktop Scanner

The Ricoh fi-8040 is a compact desktop document scanner built for offices that need fast, double-sided digitisation. It handles pages up to 8.5 by 14 inches and feeds up to 50 sheets automatically. Duplex scanning reaches 80 images per minute while simplex runs at 40 pages per minute. The 4.3 inch colour touchscreen lets operators start jobs without a connected PC.

Installation and common issues

Connection is made through USB 3.2 or wired LAN, and the box includes PaperStream IP drivers for TWAIN, ISIS and 64-bit environments. PaperStream Capture, ClickScan, Scanner Central Admin and the Software Operation Panel install alongside the drivers. The most frequent setup problem is skipping the ISIS driver when a legacy line-of-business application requires it, which causes the scanner to appear missing in that software.

Limits of USB 3.2 and LAN scanning

USB 3.2 Gen 1 caps theoretical throughput at 5 Gbps, so sustained duplex throughput at 600 dpi can saturate the bus if the host controller shares bandwidth with other devices. Wired LAN removes that bottleneck but adds network latency and depends on switch quality; very long cable runs or congested segments may reduce effective scan speed. The 50-sheet ADF also limits unattended batch size, requiring operator reloads for larger jobs.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the fi-8040 is scanning at the rated 40 ppm simplex and 80 ipm duplex after setup?

Run a timed test batch through the 50-page ADF and compare the page count per minute against the 40 ppm simplex and 80 ipm duplex ratings shown on the 4.3" touchscreen.

What comes in the box with the PA03836-B005 and what must I purchase separately?

The scanner ships with USB 3.2 and LAN cables, the 4.3" touchscreen installed, and PaperStream IP, Capture, ClickScan, Central Admin and Software Operation Panel software; no consumables or extra licences are included.

Which capacity or version of the fi-8040 should I choose for my workload?

The PA03836-B005 is a single configuration — 600 dpi optical resolution, 50-page ADF, USB 3.2 and wired LAN, 4.3" touchscreen — so select it if those specifications match your volume and connectivity needs.
