CP2102 Adapter for Utility Meter Reading

This adapter cable connects a micro USB port to the near-infrared optical interface found on electricity, gas and water meters. It uses a CP2102 USB-to-UART bridge to translate meter data for PC software. The magnetic head holds the probe against the meter’s optical port during a reading session. It is intended for technicians and hobbyists who collect consumption data locally.

Driver Installation and Magnetic Alignment

The CP2102 chip requires a virtual COM port driver on Windows, Linux or macOS before the meter software can communicate. The magnetic coupling must be centred on the meter’s IR window; an offset or loose fit causes dropped frames and failed reads. Ambient sunlight or strong artificial light can also interfere with the optical link, so shading the probe often resolves errors.
