Which connector is it, and does it fit your power supply?

Inside a PC the main cables are the 24-pin ATX board connector, the 4+4 pin EPS cable for the CPU, 6+2 pin PCIe cables for graphics cards, the newer 12V-2x6 connector on recent cards, SATA power for drives, Molex (LP4) and the 3-pin or 4-pin fan headers. Extensions and adapters with standard connectors at both ends work across brands.

Modular power supplies are different. The socket on the supply side has a pinout that varies between brands and sometimes between series, so a modular cable from another supply can send power to the wrong pins and damage parts. Use only cables made for your supply's model, and use standard extensions when you simply need extra length.

Extensions, splitters and risers: what each one really adds

An extension makes a short cable reach or tidies the routing, and its wire gauge should match the original, since thin wire heats under load. A fan splitter shares one motherboard header, which supplies roughly an amp, so check the total fan current. Adapters such as LP4 to 8-pin PCIe suit low-power cards only. A PCIe riser lets a graphics card stand upright, and its rating has to match the slot: a PCIe 5.0 riser also works at 4.0 and 3.0, but a PCIe 3.0 riser on a faster card can cause errors or force a slower link.

Questions about Internal PSU Power and PCIe Riser Cables

Can I use modular cables from another power supply?
No. The pinout at the supply end of a modular cable is not standardized, so a cable from another model can misroute voltages and damage components. Use cables made for your exact supply, or extensions that plug onto your own cables.
Do I need a PCIe 5.0 riser for a PCIe 4.0 graphics card?
A PCIe 5.0 riser works with a 4.0 card and is the safer choice. A riser rated below the card's generation can cause crashes or force a slower link, since long riser runs are hard to keep clean at high speeds.
Is it safe to power a graphics card with an adapter cable?
Only if the adapter's wire gauge and crimping match the card's draw. A Molex to PCIe 8-pin adapter suits low-power cards, while a demanding card needs its own dedicated cables from the supply, one per connector, with no daisy-chaining.
