Replacement HOP-14XX laser lens restores disc reading on Xbox 360 LITE-ON DG-16D2S drives
The HOP-14XX laser head replaces the optical pickup in a LITE-ON DG-16D2S drive used by the Xbox 360 console. It addresses disc read errors, slow loading and screen freezes during gameplay or DVD playback. The part is a brand new metal and plastic assembly measuring approximately 5.5 by 2 centimetres. Installation is straightforward for anyone comfortable opening the console and drive.
As a lens assembly the part has no active electronics, so it draws no power and produces no noise or heat of its own. The drive’s existing laser diode and spindle motor determine thermal and acoustic behaviour, which are unchanged by the swap. The lightweight unit weighs roughly fifty grams and fits inside the original drive chassis without altering airflow.
This replacement suits owners whose DG-16D2S drive suffers from the listed read faults and who want to avoid a full drive swap that would require firmware pairing. It does not help if the fault lies in the drive PCB, spindle motor or console motherboard. Buyers needing a different drive model or a complete drive unit should look elsewhere.

Remove the drive, open the metal casing, detach the ribbon cable, swap the laser head, then reassemble; the step most people miss is reseating the ribbon cable fully before closing the case.
The lens itself has no scheduled maintenance; if read errors return after long use, the whole laser head would be replaced again rather than serviced.
Extended heavy gaming sessions can cause the laser diode to overheat, leading to temporary read failures until the drive cools down.
