Wind Protection for Lavalier Mics

Rycote Overcovers Advanced are 26mm black fur discs designed to shield lavalier microphones from wind noise during outdoor recording. The pack contains 100 discs that fit a wide range of industry-standard lavaliers and are sized for DPA Concealers. They attach directly over the capsule without adhesives, staying secure on clothing or skin. The result is clear audio capture in challenging conditions.

Practical Limits of Passive Wind Protection

Fur discs reduce wind turbulence but cannot eliminate noise from very strong gusts or physical contact with fabric. Performance depends on the microphone’s own sensitivity and polar pattern, which these covers do not change. They add no electronic processing, so signal-to-noise ratio remains whatever the mic provides. Users must still monitor levels and position the capsule carefully.

Upgrade from Stick-On Foam or Basic Windscreens

These discs replace adhesive foam windscreens and stick-on fur pieces that leave residue or fall off during long sessions. The no-sticky design speeds up rigging and protects wardrobe and skin. The jump is worth it for professionals who change mics frequently or record daily in variable weather and need a clean, reusable solution.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 26mm size or a smaller disc for my lavalier microphone?

The 26mm diameter is designed to fit larger lavalier housings such as DPA Concealers, so select this size when your microphone capsule or mount requires the wider coverage.

How much wind-noise reduction do these fur discs actually provide on location?

Rycote's exclusive fur technology is built to deliver clear audio capture in challenging outdoor conditions, reducing wind turbulence across the microphone capsule.

Do the Overcovers Advanced use an adhesive or a specific mounting standard to stay in place?

No stickies are required; the discs simply press over the top of the lavalier microphone and grip securely on clothing or skin.
