Wind noise reduction for on-camera microphones

The Rycote Softie is a long hair wind diffuser built for on-camera microphones. It uses closely cropped dark grey synthetic fur just 10mm high to lower the profile while maintaining diffusion efficiency. The design eliminates up to 25dB of background and wind noise for clearer outdoor recordings. At 14cm long it fits a range of popular microphone bodies.

Suits outdoor recordists

This Softie serves creators who record outside and need effective wind noise reduction without a bulky windshield. It is not for users who require a full basket-style windshield system for extreme high-wind conditions. Buyers needing a different hole diameter for a specific microphone model should verify compatibility before purchase.

14cm length with medium hole for specific

The diffuser measures 14cm (5.51 inches) in length and features a medium-sized mounting hole. This configuration fits models such as the Audio Technica AT835ST and DXC-M7. Confirming the microphone diameter against the medium hole specification is the single factor that determines whether this is the correct part.

Questions about this item

What is the length of the Rycote Softie and which microphone models does the medium hole fit?

How do I install the Softie on my microphone and what is the common mistake to avoid?

Slide the Softie over the microphone barrel until the medium hole seats snugly; the step often missed is pushing it far enough so the 10 mm fur fully covers the capsule without gaps.

How long does the synthetic fur last and when should I replace the wind diffuser?

The 10 mm dark grey synthetic fur is designed for long-term outdoor use; replace the Softie when the fur becomes matted, thinned or no longer reduces wind noise by up to 25 dB.
