Capacity and fit

The Samsung SpinPoint M8 ST320LM001 is a 320GB 2.5-inch laptop internal hard drive with a SATA interface. It suits owners of older notebooks or external enclosures that require a standard 2.5-inch SATA drive. Builders needing larger capacities or faster interfaces should look elsewhere.

Sustained workload behaviour

The drive spins at 5400RPM and provides an 8MB cache for everyday read and write tasks. Sequential throughput remains consistent during long file transfers or backups rather than peaking only in short bursts. Random access performance matches expectations for a 5400RPM mechanical drive under continuous load.

Thermals noise and power

Mechanical operation at 5400RPM produces modest heat and audible seek noise typical of laptop hard drives. Power draw stays within the limits of a standard 2.5-inch SATA laptop bay without requiring additional cooling. Acoustic output is noticeable in quiet rooms but not intrusive during normal use.

Questions about this item

How much power does the 5400RPM drive draw and does it run hot in a laptop?

The 5400RPM spindle speed keeps power draw and heat low, making it suitable for continuous use in a laptop chassis.

Does my laptop need a specific SATA II connector or caddy for this 2.5" drive?

It fits any standard 2.5" SATA II bay or caddy; no proprietary connector or adapter is required.

Will the SATA II interface limit speed if I keep an older SATA I controller?

The drive works with SATA I controllers at the controller's maximum rate, so older hardware remains compatible.
