WD_BLACK P40 2TB Game Drive

This external SSD delivers up to 2000 MBps sequential read and write speeds over a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C interface. It is built for gamers who want fast load times and a portable library for PC, PlayStation or Xbox. The drive includes customisable RGB lighting controlled through the WD_BLACK Dashboard on Windows.

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C interface

The single specification that determines compatibility is the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C connection, which enables the advertised 2000 MBps transfer rates. Your host device must support this standard to achieve full performance; older USB ports will operate at lower speeds. The package supplies both Type-C to Type-C and Type-C to Type-A cables for broad connectivity.

Thermals, noise and power

With no moving parts the drive runs silently during operation. It is rated for an operating temperature range of 0°C to 45°C and a storage range of -20°C to 65°C. Power is drawn entirely from the USB bus, so no external supply is required and typical draw stays within standard USB limits.

Questions about this item

What does the 2000 MBps read speed mean when I plug the drive into my PC?

The drive can transfer large game files or video projects at up to 2000 MBps, but actual speed depends on your USB port generation and the workload.

What does USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C cap at in real use?

The interface supports up to 2000 MBps; plugging into a slower USB port will limit throughput to that port's maximum.

Will the 2.00 by 4.21 by 0.51 inch enclosure fit in my console's USB slot?

The drive measures 2.00 inches wide, 4.21 inches deep and 0.51 inches high, so it clears most front-panel ports and laptop side ports.
