Desktop storage for growing libraries

The Seagate Expansion desktop drive adds 8TB of capacity through a single USB 3.0 connection. It suits anyone who needs to consolidate photos, videos and documents without opening their computer. The drive is ready to use seconds after plugging in the supplied power adapter and cable.

USB 3.0 speed and port requirement

Transfers run at the USB 3.0 interface rate, so an available USB 3.0 port is required to reach those speeds. The 18-inch cable limits placement to roughly half a metre from the host. Reformatting is necessary before the drive works with Time Machine on macOS.

System and power checks before ordering

Verify the host runs Windows 10 or higher or macOS 10.12 or higher. A free wall outlet is needed for the 18W power adapter. Rescue Data Recovery Services are not offered in every country, so confirm local availability if that feature matters.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 8TB model or a smaller capacity?

The 8TB model holds the full 8TB capacity listed; smaller capacities are separate SKUs not covered here.

What transfer speed will I actually see over USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 caps at 5 Gbps; real-world speeds depend on the host controller, cable quality and the drive’s internal mechanical limits.

Does the USB 3.0 interface limit the drive in any way?

The drive uses a USB 3.0 connection, so sustained throughput cannot exceed the USB 3.0 specification maximum of 5 Gbps.
