Capacity and interface

The Seagate Momentus 5400.2 ST98823AS is an 80GB 2.5-inch laptop internal hard drive with a SATA 1.5Gb/s connection. It suits owners of older notebooks that require a direct replacement drive with this specific interface and physical size. Builders working with modern SATA 3Gb/s or 6Gb/s controllers should note the drive will operate at the slower 1.5Gb/s rate. It is not for systems that only accept 7mm or thinner drives.

Features and their effect

Native Command Queuing lets the drive reorder read and write commands for smoother multitasking. QuietStep ramp load technology moves the heads off the platters quietly, reducing acoustic noise during load and unload cycles. Low power consumption helps extend battery runtime on portable machines. Rugged mobility design aims to improve tolerance to shock and vibration in mobile use. The 8MB cache buffers frequent requests.

Build and daily implications

The bare drive measures 9.5mm in height, 69mm in width and 100mm in length, matching the standard 2.5-inch 9.5mm bay found in many legacy laptops. A standard SATA data and power connector provides the only installation interface; no caddy, screws or cables are included in the bare-drive package. The 5400 RPM spindle speed and 12.5ms average seek time deliver basic throughput for office tasks and archival storage.

Questions about this item

How often does the 8MB cache need servicing or replacement?

The 8MB cache is integrated into the drive controller and requires no separate maintenance or replacement during the product life.

Will the 5400 RPM spindle speed limit sustained throughput first?

Yes, the 5400 RPM rotation rate caps sequential transfer rates before the SATA 1.5Gb/s interface or 12.5ms seek time become bottlenecks.

How much heat and noise does the 2.5 inch 80GB drive produce running all day?

Low power consumption and QuietStep ramp load technology keep heat output minimal and load/unload acoustics inaudible during continuous operation.
