Compact portable storage

The Seagate Expansion STKM1000400 is a 1TB portable hard drive in a 2.5-inch form factor. It connects via USB 3.0 and draws power from the same cable, so no external supply is needed. The drive works with Windows and macOS out of the box, making it suited for users who want simple extra capacity for photos, videos or documents while travelling.

USB 3.0 speed ceiling

The USB 3.0 interface sets the maximum transfer rate, so performance will not exceed what that standard allows. You must plug the drive into a USB 3.0 port to reach those speeds; a USB 2.0 port will still work but at lower throughput. The included cable is 18 inches long, which limits how far the drive can sit from the host port.

Pre-purchase checks

Verify that your computer has an available USB 3.0 port and runs a supported Windows or macOS version; check seagate.com/os for the current list. If you plan to use Time Machine on a Mac, the drive will need reformatting first. Rescue Data Recovery Services are not offered in every country, so confirm eligibility if that coverage matters to you.

Questions about this item

Is the 1TB Expansion model the only capacity available in this series?

The product listed here is the 1TB version of the Seagate Expansion portable drive. Other capacities exist in the range but are separate items.

What real-world transfer speed can I expect from the USB 3.0 interface on this drive?

The USB 3.0 interface supports up to 5 Gbps, but actual throughput is limited by the internal mechanical drive and the host system's USB controller.

Does the USB 3.0 connection require a separate power adapter for this 2.5-inch drive?

No, the drive draws power directly from the USB 3.0 port via the included 18-inch cable, so no external power supply is needed.
