1 TB Portable Storage

The Seagate STGX1000400 is a 1 TB portable hard drive designed for users who need extra capacity for documents, photos and media while travelling. Its 2.5 inch form factor and lightweight build suit laptop bags and desk drawers alike.

USB 3.0 Interface Limits

The drive connects via USB 3.0 and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, though transfer speeds will drop to the older standard. Maximum throughput requires a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port on the host computer.

Plug-and-Play Setup

Installation is a simple case of connecting the supplied 18-inch cable; the drive is recognised automatically on Windows 10, 8 and 7 with no software to install. Mac users may need to reformat the drive before first use. The 5400 RPM mechanism is not suited to intensive random-access workloads or boot-drive duties.

Questions about this item

Is the 1 TB version the only capacity available for the STGX1000400?

The STGX1000400 model is supplied as a 1 TB drive; other capacities carry different model numbers.

What does the 5400 RPM rating mean for everyday file transfers?

The 5400 RPM spindle delivers typical hard-drive throughput for documents, photos and backups, with sequential speeds limited by the USB 3.0 link.

How fast can data actually move over the USB 3.0 interface?

The drive uses a USB 3.0 connection with an 18-inch cable; real-world transfer rates top out at the USB 3.0 bus limit and fall back to USB 2.0 speeds on older ports.
