Cylindrical photoelectric proximity sensor with 3 mm to 170 mm sensing range, PNP output and IP67-rated plastic housing
The Sick VTE18-4P2940 is a cylindrical photoelectric proximity sensor with a radial optical axis and an M18 x 1 thread. It uses energetic infrared LED detection with a 270° potentiometer for sensing range adjustment. The housing is 75 mm long and made from PBT/PC plastic with a PMMA optic, weighing 100 g. It connects via a 4-pin M12 male connector and operates on 10 V DC to 30 V DC.
This sensor suits applications requiring a PNP switching output with selectable light or dark switching via the L/D control cable. It provides a 100 mA output current and a 250 Hz switching frequency with a 2 ms response time. Buyers needing NPN output logic or a different connector type should look elsewhere. The fixed M12 4-pin interface limits wiring flexibility for non-standard pinouts.
The sensor reliably detects objects from 3 mm to 170 mm, with a maximum sensing range reaching 200 mm. The light spot measures 10 mm at that distance with a 2.8° dispersion angle. It operates in ambient temperatures from –25 °C to +70 °C and meets IP67 enclosure rating for dust and water protection. Protection class III circuitry includes safeguards A through D, and UL file NMFT2.E175606 is on record.

The sensor operates on 10 V DC to 30 V DC with a maximum 10 % ripple, so the installed power supply must stay within that range.
Yes, the sensor uses a standard male M12 4-pin connector, which matches common industrial M12 cables used with older proximity switches.
Turn the 270° potentiometer until the output toggles at the desired distance up to 170 mm, then confirm the switching frequency reaches 250 Hz and the response time stays at 2 ms.
