Detects objects up to 45 mm away with focused infrared optics and adjustable sensing range via potentiometer
The Sick VTF18-4P5712 is a cylindrical photoelectric proximity sensor with background blanking and a PNP switching output. It detects objects using an axial infrared LED beam focused to a 3 mm spot at 25 mm distance, making it suitable for presence checks in automation and machine-building tasks.
The unit needs a 10 V DC to 30 V DC supply with no more than 10 % ripple and draws up to 30 mA. It connects via a 2 m, 4-wire PVC cable with 0.14 mm² conductors and an M18 × 1 thread for mounting. Verify that your controller accepts a PNP light/dark selectable signal and that the 100 mA maximum output current is sufficient.
The sensor operates silently with no moving parts and a typical power consumption of 30 mA at the rated voltage. Its plastic PBT/PC housing and PMMA optics are rated IP67, so performance stays consistent across the –25 °C to +70 °C ambient range without active cooling or audible noise.

The sensor has a 2 m PVC cable permanently attached with four 0.14 mm² conductors, so no separate cable is required. The M18 × 1 threaded housing uses a standard mounting nut, which is not included in the box.
This model has a fixed maximum sensing range of 0 mm to 50 mm and a usable range of 0 mm to 45 mm; no alternative range versions exist for this part number.
At 250 Hz the sensor can resolve objects spaced about 4 mm apart when the belt moves at 1 m/s, and the 2 ms response time adds only 2 mm of positional uncertainty at that speed.
