Lens Purpose

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art is a constant-aperture zoom built for APS-C mirrorless cameras using the L-Mount. It suits photographers and videographers who need bright, wide-to-standard coverage with prime-level sharpness across the frame. The 11-blade diaphragm produces smooth bokeh for portraits and cinematic work. It is not for shooters requiring full-frame image circles or telephoto reach beyond 40mm.

Installation Notes

The lens mounts directly to any L-Mount APS-C body with no adapter required. Internal zoom keeps the barrel length constant, which helps maintain gimbal balance during video runs. The linear motor drives fast, quiet autofocus, while dual AFL buttons and a focus-mode switch give quick tactile control. Dust and splash resistance protects the mechanism in light weather. Buyers without an L-Mount APS-C camera cannot use this lens natively.

Interface Limits

The L-Mount bayonet and APS-C image circle define the usable sensor area; full-frame bodies will vignette or require crop mode. Constant f/1.8 brightness holds across the 17-40mm range, but the aperture cannot open wider for shallower depth of field. Minimum focus distance of 11 inches and 1:4.8 magnification limit close-up detail compared with dedicated macro optics. Focus breathing is suppressed yet not eliminated for critical cinema work.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the lens maintains a constant f/1.8 aperture across the 17-40mm zoom range after setup?

Set the aperture to f/1.8 and zoom from 17mm to 40mm while monitoring the exposure value; the reading should stay unchanged if the constant aperture is working correctly.

What accessories are included in the bundle and what must I buy separately?

The bundle includes a filter kit, digital cleaning solution, cleaning cloth, tabletop tripod, air blower, and cleaning brush; additional filters, a camera body, or a gimbal are not included.

Which focal-length version should I choose for wide-angle landscapes and close-up versatility?

The single 17-40mm version covers wide-angle landscapes at 17mm and offers 1:4.8 magnification at an 11-inch minimum focus distance for close-up work.
