Open-source USB-CAN adapter for field debugging

The SMUGDESK CANable adapter converts a USB port into a CAN bus interface using an STM32 microcontroller running CandleLight firmware. It targets engineers and technicians who need to capture, filter and log CAN frames on automotive ECUs, servo drives or industrial PLCs without a bench analyser.

Jumper-selectable termination

A 120 ohm terminal resistor is enabled by a jumper cap, removing the need for an external terminator on short buses. The device appears as a virtual serial port on Windows, macOS, Linux and Raspberry Pi, so SocketCAN, Wireshark, CAN utils, Cangaroo and Python-CAN work without vendor drivers.

CAN 2.0A/B bandwidth ceiling at 1 Mbps

The adapter supports standard and extended frames at baud rates from 10 Kbps up to 1 Mbps, which is the hard limit of the CAN 2.0 specification. It cannot handle CAN FD or higher-layer protocols that require faster raw throughput, and the USB bus power restricts use to low-current nodes.
