Adds a DB9 serial port to USB 2.0 computers using a genuine FTDI chip for reliable legacy device communication up to 1Mbps
The SMUGDESK USB2920 adds a physical RS232 DB9 male port to any computer with a USB 2.0 socket. It is built around a genuine FTDI chipset for reliable bidirectional serial communication. Engineers, technicians and hobbyists use it to configure routers, PLCs, modems, barcode scanners and other legacy serial equipment. No external power supply is required because the adapter draws all current from the host USB port.
Modern laptops and desktops no longer include built-in RS232 connectors, so this adapter restores that capability instantly. After installing the official FTDI drivers from the manufacturer website, the device creates a virtual COM port that legacy software recognises exactly like a motherboard port. The upgrade is worth it whenever a USB-only machine must talk to industrial or networking gear that only speaks RS232.
The FTDI chipset maintains stable data rates up to 1Mbps during long debugging or data-logging sessions without the dropouts common in generic converters. Bus-powered operation and remote wake-up support keep the link alive through host sleep cycles. Rugged DB9 housing with mounting screws prevents loose contacts caused by vibration or cable strain in field-service and industrial environments.

No published specifications for this item yet.
The adapter has a standard DB9 male connector with mounting screws that threads directly into the RS232 port on routers, PLCs, barcode scanners or other legacy serial equipment.
Download the official FTDI drivers from the FTDI website, install them, then plug the adapter into a USB 2.0 port; the system will create a virtual COM port you can select in your terminal or configuration software.
No scheduled maintenance is needed; keep the driver up to date through the FTDI site and check the DB9 mounting screws occasionally for tightness in high-vibration environments.
