Sony 5.25" SATA DVD Burner

This new Sony 5280S-CB-ROBOT is a 5.25-inch internal optical drive that writes and reads CDs and DVDs over a SATA connection. It fits a standard half-height bay and uses a tray loading mechanism. The unit is suited for desktop builders who still need physical media support for software installs, backups or disc authoring.

Suits optical-media workflows

Users who archive data to DVD±R dual-layer discs at 12X or burn CDs at 48X will find the write speeds adequate. The 2 MB buffer helps prevent buffer underruns during recording. Builders with slimline chassis, external-only setups or a requirement for Blu-ray reading should look at other form factors or drive types because this model is limited to CD and DVD formats.

16X DVD write speed decides fit

The maximum 16X DVD±R write rate is the key figure that determines whether this drive matches your burning time targets. Dual-layer DVD recording reaches 12X while CD-R tops out at 48X. If your workflow demands faster DVD writing or Blu-ray capability, this specification indicates the drive will not meet that need.

Questions about this item

What does the 16X DVD write speed mean when I'm burning a disc?

At 16X the drive writes a single-layer DVD+R or DVD-R in roughly five to six minutes, while dual-layer DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL top out at 12X and take about eight minutes.

How does the SATA 150 interface limit real-world throughput?

The Serial ATA-150 link caps sustained transfer at 150 MB/s, well above the 16X DVD rate of about 22 MB/s, so the interface never bottlenecks burning or reading.

Will this 5.25-inch tray drive fit my case's external bay?

It measures 1.60 inches high, 5.80 inches wide and 6.70 inches deep, matching the standard half-height 5.25-inch bay cutout and mounting holes.
