Product identity

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is a wireless over-ear headphone that uses dual processors and eight microphones to deliver industry-leading noise cancellation. An Auto NC Optimiser adjusts the cancellation level to the wearer’s fit and surroundings. Integrated Processor V1 drives the 30-hour battery and supports quick charging for three hours of playback after a three-minute top-up. Multipoint Bluetooth lets the headset stay paired to two devices at once.

Ideal listener

Commuters and office workers who need strong isolation for calls and music will benefit from the four beamforming microphones and adaptive noise control. The lightweight frame and soft-fit leather pads suit long listening sessions. Buyers who require a wired connection for lossless audio or studio monitoring should consider other models because this unit operates wirelessly only.

Deciding specification

The 30-hour battery life with three-minute quick charge is the single figure that determines whether the headset matches a user’s daily routine. If a full day of travel or back-to-back meetings exceeds that endurance, an alternative with longer run-time will be necessary.
