The Sophos XGS 118w is a desktop security appliance that combines wired and wireless protection in a fanless chassis. It targets small offices and branch sites that need encrypted traffic inspection and threat prevention without rack mounting or active cooling. The integrated Wi-Fi 6 radio serves clients directly, removing the need for a separate access point in compact deployments.

Upgrade from 1 GbE edge devices

Replacing a 1 GbE firewall with this unit adds 2.5GBase-T ports throughout, raising the local network ceiling to 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet for every connected switch, server or workstation. The jump is worth it when internal traffic regularly saturates gigabit links or when Wi-Fi 6 clients need a matching wired backbone. Throughput figures such as 15,500 Mbps firewall and 3,250 Mbps threat protection show the headroom available for inspection workloads.

Limits of 2.5GBase-T and UFS storage

The 2.5GBase-T interfaces negotiate down to 1 GbE or 100 MbE when cabling or partner ports do not support the higher rate, so full speed requires Cat 5e or better end-to-end. The 64 GB UFS 2.1 soldered storage cannot be expanded, fixing the log and firmware capacity for the appliance lifetime. No expansion slots are present, so additional interfaces or acceleration cards cannot be added later.
