Seven USB 3.0 ports on one card

The Sponge Tech PCI-E expansion card adds two Type C and five Type A ports to a desktop system through a single PCI Express slot. It delivers up to 5Gbps transfer rates and supplies 5V 0.9A on each Type A port plus 5V 3A on the Type C ports for low-power peripherals. Windows 10 and Mac OS 10.8.2 or later work without drivers; older Windows versions need the supplied driver.

Desktop owners who need more USB 3.0 connections

Builders with a free PCI Express x1, x4, x8 or x16 slot can add keyboards, mice, drives, cameras, controllers and other USB devices in one step. The card fits standard desktop cases and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 gear. It does not suit laptops, small-form-factor systems without a full-height slot, or anyone who needs video output from the added ports.

Requires a PCI Express x1 or larger slot

Installation needs an available PCI Express x1, x4, x8 or x16 slot on the motherboard; legacy PCI slots cannot accept the card. If the board has no compatible slot, this card cannot be used.

Questions about this item

Will the 5 Gbps USB 3.0 bandwidth saturate when all seven ports transfer large files at once?

The card shares a single PCI Express lane, so total throughput cannot exceed the 5 Gbps USB 3.0 limit; simultaneous heavy transfers on multiple ports will contend for that bandwidth.

How much heat or fan noise does the card produce during continuous all-day operation?

The card has no active cooling and draws power only from the PCI Express slot and the 5 V supplies — 0.9 A per USB-A port and 3 A per USB-C port — so it runs silently with minimal heat.

Which operating systems work without installing extra drivers?

Windows 10 and Mac OS 10.8.2 or later are supported natively; Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Server 2008 require the driver from the included CD or manual download.
