Secure Portable Enclosure

The StarTech S251BMU3FP is a 2.5 inch SATA drive enclosure that adds hardware-based AES-256 encryption and fingerprint authentication to any compatible SSD or HDD. It accepts drives between 7 mm and 9.5 mm in height and connects to a host via USB-A or USB-C using the included cables. The unit draws power directly from the host port so no external adapter is required.

Sustained Encryption Load

Hardware encryption operates at line speed regardless of transfer duration so performance does not degrade during long copy or backup sessions. The aluminum housing acts as a passive heatsink to keep the drive within safe temperatures during continuous read or write activity. Bus power delivery remains stable because the enclosure is designed for the current limits of standard USB ports.

Pre-Installation Checks

Verify that your drive uses a SATA interface and fits the 7 mm to 9.5 mm height range before ordering. Confirm the host device provides a USB-A or USB-C port capable of supplying enough bus power for a mechanical drive if you plan to use an HDD. Ensure you have an operating system that supports the enclosure's fingerprint management software for initial enrolment.

Questions about this item

How much power does the enclosure draw from a laptop USB port during all-day use?

The enclosure is bus-powered from the USB-A or USB-C port, so it draws only what the port supplies — no external power adapter is needed.

Which drive heights fit inside the aluminum case so the enclosure will work?

Any 2.5" SATA SSD or HDD between 7 mm and 9.5 mm in height slides in and connects directly to the internal SATA interface.

Will the fingerprint sensor and AES-256 encryption still function when the drive is moved to an older USB 2.0 port?

Yes — the biometric unlock and hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption operate inside the enclosure itself, independent of the host USB version.
