Adds dial-up internet and fax capability to a computer via USB 2.0, supporting V.92 data rates up to 56 Kbps down and 33.6 Kbps up with 14.4 Kbps fax
The StarTech USB56KEMH2 is a hardware-based USB 2.0 dial-up and fax modem that adds a telephone line connection to a desktop or laptop. It targets users who still rely on analogue phone lines for internet access, fax transmission, security panels or point-of-sale authorisation. The external dongle draws power from the USB port and handles modulation without loading the host CPU.
A black plastic housing carries a single USB Type-A plug and one RJ11 telephone jack for a standard phone cord. The hardware Conexant controller manages V.92, V.90 and legacy ITU-T standards down to V.21, plus fax classes up to V.17 and T.31 Class 1.0. Voice and caller ID features let the computer act as a speakerphone when compatible software is installed.
This adapter replaces an internal PCI modem or a missing serial port on modern systems that lack a built-in dial-up interface. It is worthwhile when a V.92-capable external modem is needed for compression (V.44) and faster upstream rates up to 33.6 kbps. Buyers who need broadband speeds, Ethernet connectivity or wireless networking cannot use this device for those purposes.

The modem connects over USB 2.0 and delivers up to 56 Kbps downstream and 33.6 Kbps upstream for data, with fax at 14.4 Kbps.
It needs a USB Type-A port on the host and a single RJ11 telephone jack for the line connection.
Plug the modem into a USB Type-A port, connect the phone cable to the RJ11 jack, then install the driver for Windows, macOS or Linux so the Conexant CX93010 chipset is recognised.
