Mechanical design and switch type

The SteelSeries Apex 7 model 64774 is a wired gaming keyboard built with QX2 tactile and clicky mechanical RGB switches rated for 50 million keypresses. An aircraft-grade aluminum alloy frame provides structural rigidity, while per-key RGB illumination offers 16.8 million color options. A detachable magnetic wrist rest adds palm support during extended sessions.

OLED Smart Display utility

The integrated OLED Smart Display serves as an on-board command center for adjusting settings, switching profiles, and viewing real-time information from supported applications without leaving the active window. This benefits players and multitaskers who want immediate access to media controls, Discord notifications, or system data. Users who prefer a minimalist deck without an auxiliary screen or who favor silent linear switches should consider other models.

USB connectivity requirement

The keyboard connects via a single USB interface and requires an available USB port on a system running Windows or Mac OS X. No additional drivers are mandated for basic operation, and a USB passthrough port is included for attaching a mouse or other peripheral directly to the keyboard.

Questions about this item

How do I install the SteelSeries Apex 7 64774 and what step is often missed?

Plug the USB cable into a free port on your Windows or Mac system; the keyboard works immediately without extra drivers. The step many miss is attaching the magnetic wrist rest — it snaps onto the front edge and stays firm during use.

What maintenance or replacement will the Apex 7 64774 need over time?

The QX2 tactile and clicky switches are rated for 50 million keypresses, so the switches themselves rarely need replacement. Routine care is limited to wiping the aircraft-grade aluminum frame and keycaps with a dry cloth; the magnetic wrist rest can be removed for cleaning.

What limit appears first during long gaming sessions on the Apex 7 64774?

The keyboard draws power only from the USB connection, so the practical limit is the host port’s current budget. Under sustained RGB lighting at full brightness across 16.8 million colours per key, a standard USB port stays within spec, but a heavily loaded hub could throttle power.
