Socket and chipset

The Supermicro MBD-X11SSH-LN4F-O is a micro ATX server motherboard built around the Intel C236 chipset and the LGA 1151 socket. It supports Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 and v6 processors, 6th and 7th generation Core i3 CPUs, plus Celeron and Pentium parts with a thermal design power up to 80W. This board targets small-form-factor servers and workstations that need ECC memory and multiple network ports in a compact 9.6 by 9.6 inch layout.

Memory capacity and ECC headroom

Four 288-pin DDR4 slots accept unbuffered ECC UDIMMs at 2133, 1866 or 1600 MHz, with a maximum capacity of 64GB. The 72-bit memory bus provides error correction for data integrity in always-on workloads. Builds requiring more than 64GB or registered DIMMs will exceed what this platform can address, so high-density virtualisation hosts should look elsewhere.

Expansion and storage interface limits

The board offers one PCI-E 3.0 x8 slot wired in an x16 connector, a second PCI-E 3.0 x8 slot and a PCI-E 3.0 x4 slot wired in an x8 connector. Storage connects through eight SATA 6.0Gb/s ports with RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 support, plus a single M.2 2280 connector running at PCI-E 3.0 x2. The M.2 interface does not deliver full x4 bandwidth, and the PCI-E slot configuration limits the number of high-throughput add-in cards that can run at their rated width.
