Socket, memory type and processor family

Server boards are tied tightly to one processor family, so start with the socket. Socket SP3 takes the EPYC 7002 and 7003 generations with DDR4, while SP5 takes EPYC 9004 and 9005 with DDR5. On the Xeon side LGA 4677 takes 4th and 5th generation Scalable processors, and LGA 1700 and LGA 1200 serve single-socket Xeon E and entry platforms. Check the board's CPU list, since a consumer chip with the same pin count may not be supported.

Memory deserves the same care. Most server boards want ECC registered modules (RDIMM) and publish how many modules, ranks and which speeds each channel supports, while smaller single-socket boards may use unbuffered ECC instead. The number of slots, and whether the platform has eight, twelve or more channels, sets the bandwidth. Fill every channel with identical modules where the manual recommends it, because a half-populated board leaves memory bandwidth unused.

Form factor, network ports and remote management

Sizes run from Mini ITX through Micro ATX and ATX to Extended ATX and EEB, and a rackmount chassis fixes which of them fits and how tall the heatsink can be. Onboard networking varies from 1 Gbit/s controllers to 10 Gbit/s copper ports and SFP+ cages that need transceivers or direct-attach cables. Many boards add a baseboard management controller with a dedicated port for remote console and power control, which matters for machines you will never stand next to.

Questions about Server and Workstation Motherboards

Can I put a desktop processor in a server board?
Only if the board's support list names it. Server boards accept specific processor families for each socket, and a consumer chip with the same pin count may be unsupported or lose features such as ECC memory support. Match the exact model to the list.
What does the management port on a server board do?
A baseboard management controller gives remote access independent of the operating system: a virtual console, power cycling and hardware monitoring over a dedicated network port. It saves site visits for headless machines and is often called IPMI.
What is the difference between 10GBASE-T and SFP+ ports?
10GBASE-T uses ordinary twisted-pair RJ45 network cable. SFP+ is a cage that takes a transceiver or a direct-attach cable and is common for short links to a switch. Make sure your switch offers the same kind of port.
