Adds one PCI Express x8 slot in a 1U form factor with passive Gen2 support
The Supermicro RSC-RR1U-E8 is a passive riser card built for 1U rackmount chassis. It converts a single motherboard PCI Express x8 slot into a horizontally mounted PCI Express x8 slot. This allows the installation of full-height expansion cards in servers where vertical clearance is limited to one rack unit. The black PCB matches standard server aesthetics.
This riser replaces the need to mount expansion cards vertically in a 1U enclosure, which is physically impossible for most full-height add-in cards. The jump is worth it when a server build requires a RAID controller, network adapter, or HBA that exceeds the chassis height limit. It supports PCI Express Gen2 signalling, so it is suited for cards that do not require Gen3 or Gen4 bandwidth to operate at their rated performance.
Because the card is completely passive, it adds no active cooling components and relies entirely on the chassis airflow directed by system fans. Under sustained load, the riser introduces minimal signal degradation thanks to a short trace length between the motherboard connector and the output slot. Thermal performance depends on the installed expansion card and the server's internal air velocity; the riser itself generates negligible heat. Builders needing multiple expansion slots or Gen3 and Gen4 support should look elsewhere.

Yes, the card is built to a 1U form factor and converts a single PCI-E x8 slot into a horizontal PCI-E x8 slot for low-profile expansion cards.
Insert the riser's PCI-E x8 edge connector into the motherboard's PCI-E x8 slot, then secure the bracket to the chassis; the step often missed is fastening the retention screw that prevents the card from lifting under vibration.
No, the RSC-RR1U-E8 is a passive Gen2 design with no onboard firmware or fans, so it requires no software updates or cooling maintenance over its service life.
