Replacing a native VGA port

This adapter replaces a missing or damaged VGA port on a laptop, desktop or docking station when the only video output available is DisplayPort. The jump is worth it when the source supports DisplayPort 1.1a signalling and the target display accepts analogue VGA timings up to 1080p, because the adapter handles the digital-to-analogue conversion internally with a standby current of 64uA.

Practical limits of the VGA interface

The VGA side supports standard PC resolutions including VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA and UXGA, plus HDTV modes of 480i, 576i, 480p, 576p, 1080i and 1080p. It cannot carry audio, HDCP-protected content or resolutions beyond 1080p, and it does not support DisplayPort 1.2 or higher link rates, so multi-stream transport and higher refresh rates at 1440p or 4K are not possible.
