Portable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 4 router

The TP-Link TL-WR802N is a pocket-sized wireless router that supports Wi-Fi 4 on the 2.4 GHz band. It delivers up to 300 Mbps wireless data rates under the IEEE 802.11n standard. The device includes a single 10/100 Mbps WAN/LAN port and a Micro USB port for power. Multiple operation modes cover router, access point, range extender, client and WISP scenarios.

Travellers needing a compact hotspot

This unit suits travellers who want to create a secure Wi-Fi hotspot from a wired connection or extend an existing 2.4 GHz network. Its small form factor and USB power option make it convenient for hotel rooms or temporary setups. Buyers who need 5 GHz operation, Gigabit Ethernet ports, or newer Wi-Fi standards should look at other hardware. Users requiring multiple LAN ports for wired devices will also find the single port limiting.

Single 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port

The sole wired interface is one 10/100 Mbps port that serves as either WAN or LAN. This constraint caps wired throughput at 100 Mbps and allows only one wired device at a time unless an external switch is added. Verify that your intended use can work with this single port before purchasing.

Questions about this item

Does the TL-WR802N need a separate power adapter or can I run it from a laptop USB port?

It draws 5 V / 1 A through the Micro USB port so you can power it from any USB-A socket or the supplied adapter.

Will the 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port slow down my older 100BASE-TX wired devices?

The port negotiates at 10 or 100 Mbps, matching legacy 100BASE-TX gear without bottlenecking the 300 Mbps wireless link.

How do I confirm the router is delivering the 300 Mbps wireless rate after setup?

Connect a Wi-Fi 4 client, check the link speed in its network status — it should show 300 Mbps when signal is strong.
