Cable type and purpose

This Category 6 patch cable carries Ethernet signals up to 1 Gbit/s between switches, routers, modems, servers or network adapters. The 6 ft purple jacket makes it easy to identify in a crowded rack or desk setup.

Deciding specification

The 24 AWG stranded conductors and molded snagless boots protect the RJ-45 male connectors from crosstalk and physical strain during frequent moves. RoHS compliance confirms the materials meet environmental standards.

Installation and common issues

Both ends are pre-terminated with rugged strain-relief boots, so the cable plugs straight into any standard RJ-45 port without tools. The snagless design prevents the release tabs from catching on adjacent cables, but the fixed 6 ft length cannot be shortened or extended in the field.

Questions about this item

What does the 1 Gbit/s rate mean once the cable is plugged into a router or switch?

It supports Gigabit Ethernet speeds up to 1 Gbit/s when connected to compatible network devices such as routers, switches, hubs, modems, servers or network adapters.

How does the RJ-45 connector and Cat6 rating limit what the cable can carry in practice?

The RJ-45 male connectors and Category 6 rating cap performance at 1 Gbit/s for Gigabit Ethernet; the cable is unshielded UTP with 24 AWG stranded conductors.

What physical space and mounting does the 6 ft purple cable with moulded boots need?

The cable is 6 ft long, weighs 0.2 lb, has snagless moulded boots with strain relief on both RJ-45 ends, and uses a purple PVC jacket for easy identification.
