Compact four-port router with SFP uplink

The Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 is a fanless, metal-cased gateway aimed at small offices and technically minded home users who need deterministic throughput without acoustic noise. Its quad-core processor and 1 GB of RAM drive a routing engine rated at 3.4 million packets per second for 64-byte frames and a sustained 4 Gbps line rate for packets of 128 bytes or larger.

Silent metal chassis and mixed copper-fibre

The enclosure measures 1.22 by 9.02 by 5.37 inches and weighs 1.75 lbs, drawing a maximum of 13 W from an internal 110-240 V AC supply. Three RJ45 ports handle 10/100/1000 Mbps copper links while a single 1 Gbps SFP cage accepts fibre or direct-attach modules for uplinks or long-haul runs. Operating temperature spans -10 to 50 °C at 10-90 % non-condensing humidity.

Verify power, mounting and management expectations

The unit ships with an AC adapter and a reset button but no rack ears or DIN clips, so confirm you have shelf or wall space for the 9-inch width. EdgeOS provides both a graphical web interface and a full CLI, while UNMS mobile app support allows remote monitoring; ensure your team is comfortable with either workflow before deployment.

Questions about this item

What throughput does the Gigabit SFP port actually cap at?

The SFP port runs at 1 Gbps, so line-rate traffic is limited to 1 Gbps even though the router can forward 4 Gbps for packets of 128 bytes or larger.

What clearance does the 1.22" x 9.02" x 5.37" metal case need for rack or shelf mounting?

The unit is 1.22 inches high, 9.02 inches wide and 5.37 inches deep; allow at least that footprint plus cable bend radius behind the RJ45 and SFP ports.

How is the EdgeRouter 4 powered up for the first time, and what step is often missed?

Connect the included AC adapter to the 110-240V input, then wait for the boot sequence to finish before accessing the web UI or CLI; skipping the wait causes login failures.
